The Reasons that Induced Dr. S to write a Poem called The Lady's Dressing Room - Lady Montagu

This poem is written by Lady Montagu in response to Jonathan Smiths poem, "The Lady's Dressing Room." Swift wrote the poem about woman and how disgusting he thinks they are. For example, he talks about arm pit stains and goes into detail about how the one woman he is describing has arm pit stains and how repulsive he thinks they are.

Lady Montagu writes this poem in response to the nasty attitude Swift had toward women. I absolutely loved how aggressive Lady Montagu was toward Swift. She did not hold back her feelings and she faught back very well. She is aggressive right back to him and even calls him out! She tells her audience why she believed that Swift was writing his poem in the first place. Apparently Swift paid a prostitue to have intercourse and when it came time to have intercourse, he couldn't perform properly. He demands the prostitute for his money back and she refuses to do so.

"I'll so describe your dressing room / The very Irish shall not come."

He storms out of the room because of embarrassment and anger. Lady Montague goes on to explain that this is the reason behind his nasty poem about women, just from this one unfortunate experience he had with a prostitue.

It was funny and interesting to read this poem by Lady Montagu after having read the poem by Swift. You start to put two and two together and understand why Swift was so nasty. The poor man was embarrassed and ashamed of himself. The only way he felt better about himself was to write an aggressive and rude poem about women.
